The SuperB approach to high luminosity

The next-generation B factory to be built in Italy will reach new levels in luminosity by employing the innovative crab-waist scheme at the beam collision point.

Figure: Plans for the SuperB facility, which is to be built on the Tor Vergata campus of Rome University.

Two years of LHC physics: ATLAS takes stock

From the first paper to the dozens of ground-breaking results presented over recent months, the first two years of ATLAS physics have been a hugely productive time.

Getting closer to finding out if the Higgs exists

CERN has been in effervescence for the last few weeks, with rumors running wild and hopes flying even higher. In fact, for the past few weeks, the physicists from ATLAS and CMS, the two collaborations looking for the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), have known half the answer. The problem is that the truth lies in knowing the other half, which will only be known officially at a special seminar organized by CERN director general on December 13 at 14:00.

Weird particles in Graphene

Graphene - a single layer of carbon atoms from graphite - has displayed a variety of unusual properties, including having effectively massless charged quasiparticles.

In the normal world of particle physics such particles would be unstable against decay, but chirality protects these from doing so. They could be the basis for completely novel electronic and spintronic devices.

AMS: the search for exotic matter goes into space

For the first time, a particle-physics detector will study cosmic rays from beyond the Earth’s atmosphere in an experiment lasting many years. Aboard the International Space Station, the Alphamagnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02) is seeking clues about both antimatter and the "dark side" of the universe.
